Growing Dragon Fruit in Your Garden
Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitahaya, is a unique and exotic fruit that has gained popularity in recent years. It is one of those fruits that you look twice at when walking passed as its quite unusual. The two most common types have bright red skin with green scales or spikes that resemble a dragon, hence the name.
You may have spotted some in Spar recently but they are native to the region of Southern Mexico. It’s grown on a Hylocereus cactus, also known as Honolulu queen, whose flowers only open at night. You can see from the photo below how it grows on a cactus type plant.
The production of dragon fruit in South Africa is increasing and we have grown some in the original farm house garden at Fairview Estates. Dragon fruit grows well in climates where avocados, bananas and macadamia nuts are grown and will fit in well with the productions systems of this produce (good news for our Fairview farmers).
The flavour is mildly sweet and is often referred to as a cross between a kiwi fruit and a pear. The flesh of the fruit is white or pink, dotted with small black seeds that are edible, but can be removed if desired. It has a refreshing, juicy texture that makes it a great addition to smoothies, fruit salads, or eaten on its own as a snack.
Low in calories and high in fiber and antioxidants, they provide a good amount of vitamins and minerals. Because of this, it’s a great low calorie snack option which can help improve digestion and promote feelings of fullness.
